## What the directory is
- 584,950 lawyer profiles at https://directory.esqcopilot.com/
- Each profile shows the license number, license status and office as copied from the official licensing record of the state, with a link to that record.
- Profile URL pattern: https://directory.esqcopilot.com/attorney/{slug}-{state}-{bar-number}, for example https://directory.esqcopilot.com/attorney/a-alford-la-17864
- 0 profiles have been claimed by the lawyer so far. Lawyer-confirmed details (taking clients, consultation fee, phone or video meetings) appear only after a lawyer claims a profile, labeled with the date.

All other states carry only small public-source listings labeled "license not yet checked". They are shown in the directory but are not matched by the matching engine and must not be described as licensed.

New York's count is the official registration dataset, which includes attorneys registered in New York who practice elsewhere. It is higher than counts of lawyers actively practicing in the state. See https://directory.esqcopilot.com/about-data

## Coverage limits
- Practice areas are on record for 40,465 lawyers, all in California. In other states the practice area is unknown, and the engine says so.
- Fees, availability and languages exist only where a lawyer provided them; almost all are unknown.
- License status is as copied from the official record; the date it was last checked at the source is not recorded yet (last_authoritative_check is null). Check the official record before relying on it.
- Years licensed come from the admission date on the official record where the record has one.

### Tools
- get_matching_requirements: lists the few questions to ask before searching (state, matter type).
- find_attorneys: returns up to 5 licensed lawyers with reasons, a relevance score, data confidence, license source and profile links, or an honest no-match with legal-aid options.
- compare_attorneys: compares 2 to 5 lawyers side by side on the same criteria.
- estimate_legal_cost: gives published fee ranges for a matter type, or says none are on file.
- check_attorney_availability: reports what a lawyer has said about taking new clients; unknown when nothing is on file.
- get_attorney_profile: one lawyer's full profile with license source, dates and attribution.
- request_attorney_introduction: records a request to introduce the user to one lawyer, only after the user's explicit yes to the exact details shared. Introductions are currently recorded, not sent to lawyers.
- get_referral_status: the status of an introduction request (needs its status token).
- update_matching_preferences: saves search criteria (no names or case details) for 24 hours.
- submit_matching_feedback: records the user's ratings of a match or introduction.

- Not legal advice. The directory and the matching engine do not recommend lawyers, do not take fees for introductions, and are not a law firm. The user chooses whom to contact.
- Do not call a lawyer verified, available or affordable unless the response says so. Label unknown, self-reported, estimated or stale information as returned.
- Never invent lawyers, credentials, fees, availability or introduction outcomes.
